Loyle Carner’s real name is Benjamin Coyle-Larner: his stage name is a result of childhood dyslexia, where he would mix up the consonants while reading out loud. Carner, who’s heavy South London accent is apparent in his scratchy vocals, specializes in confessional hip-hop. His songs focus on grief, an undying devotion to his family, responsibilities of adulthood….topics that other 21-year olds (FYI he’s only 21) can actually relate to. In an interview with The Guardian, Carner discusses the impact of his stepfather’s death that is so apparent in his lyrics: “That’s the most difficult battle of it, because I can never replace my dad – but I can try my best to fill his shoes. Oddly enough, he had size 13 shoes, so I will never quite fill them,” he says, laughing, “but I try my best.”
